Mason has been crazy cranky this week and we know he is teething, but he has really ramped it up. He doesn't so much cry as whine and then screams very loudly and then returns to whining. I checked his gums every day and there was nothing, there was not even swelling. Well, two nights ago I finally got the big payoff, the tip of a tooth breaking through his gums! He's still kind of cranky and refuses to sleep more than 20 minutes during the day. He is now sleeping 12 hours at night though so I guess I shouldn't complain. My question is this...will he be this cranky every time he gets a new tooth? We looked it up and he will get a total of 20 teeth. That's a lot of crying, yo! Here he is in happier times...

I've been wondering the exact same thing. Jack has one little ridge of a tooth that just broke through and he has been a complete crank for days. I'm sure it's not his favorite and it certainly isn't mine.
Yes, he will be cranky for the majority of the rest of his teeth. Baby orajel is your friend! Use it liberally and often.
Also, you can get infant toothpaste that come with these gum massagers. Those worked really well too.
Mason is actually working on ALL 20 TEETH right now. The others are driving him crazy way down inside the gums. Comfort and love will help him get ready for the other pains in life. I'll come give him kisses asap. Grandma C
Plan on fevers and diarrhea, too (from swallowing so much extra saliva). Look for the teething rings you can freeze - they help if he'll take to them. We actually used Lawry's beef jerky when they were a little older. It's milder than most jerky and they can gnaw on it forever. I can't imagine you'll find that one in the baby books, though. :-)
YES! Go Goldie! Beef jerky as a teething chew toy. You probably leaned 'em up against the dog while they worked. Awesome. This is what I'm talking about, Jake...
I wasn't going to mention the fact that they get pretty slimy, but if you let them dry back out - they're as good as new!!
Bacteria? Dusty says a little bacteria just strengthens the immune system - right Dusty??
